Locs and retwists care guide — HAIRflow by KD Sandy Springs Atlanta

Locs and retwists: a care guide for every stage

Locs are one of the most committed hairstyles you can choose. They are also one of the most rewarding.

But the journey from starter locs to fully mature locs is longer than most people expect, and what you do during each stage determines how healthy and beautiful your locs become.

After 10 years working with locs at HAIRflow by KD, here is what I tell every client who sits in my chair.

The stages of locs and what to expect

Locs go through 4 main stages: starter, budding, teen, and mature.

The starter stage is the first 3 to 6 months. Your locs are freshly installed and still finding their shape. They may unravel at the tips, look frizzy, or feel loose. This is normal. Resist the urge to retwist too frequently during this stage as over-manipulation causes thinning at the roots.

The budding stage runs from around month 6 to month 12. Your locs start to swell and the hair begins locking properly. The texture changes and you will notice the locs holding their shape better between retwists.

The teen stage is month 12 to around month 18. This is often the most frustrating stage because the locs can look uneven and unpredictable. They are not fully mature yet but they are past the beginning. Stay consistent with your retwist schedule and trust the process.

Mature locs begin around 18 months to 2 years. The locs are fully locked, defined, and significantly easier to maintain. Most clients find this is when they fall completely in love with their hair.

How often should you get a retwist

For starter and budding locs, every 4 to 6 weeks is ideal. Retwisting too often weakens the roots. Waiting too long causes the new growth to matt unevenly.

For mature locs, many clients come in every 6 to 8 weeks. Some stretch to 10 weeks with a solid home care routine.

The right interval depends on how fast your hair grows, how much frizz you can tolerate, and how your scalp feels between appointments.

How to care for locs at home between retwists

Keep your scalp moisturised. A lightweight oil applied directly to the scalp every few days prevents dryness and flaking. Avoid heavy products that cause buildup inside the locs.

Wash your locs every 2 to 4 weeks depending on your activity level. Use a residue-free shampoo and make sure your locs dry completely after washing. Locs that stay damp develop mildew inside, which is very difficult to treat.

Sleep with a satin scarf or bonnet every night. It reduces frizz, protects the edges, and keeps your retwist looking fresh for longer.
